Artist's Comments

I submit this image because it made me think (again!) - What makes a photo good?
This image is out of focus - due to motion blur, but also because I focused too close. Ben (my swinging boy) is cropped and looking away, and there is no way to tell which way is up.
This should not be a good image!
Yet - IMHO - it is! I went through some older images and found it, and it grabbed me! The candid expression, the monochrome background, the division of space - all come together in this seemingly poor photograph, to make it, somehow, perfect.

I would love to read your opinion - I could never make such an image intentionally, but love the way it has turned out!

Photoshop - minor color correction and curves, otherwise straight from the camera...

Thanks, but why? (given all the technical "wrongs")

I don't really know. lol I love the high contrast and the ambiguous space. I think the blurred background creates a really nice sense of motion that makes you feel like you're swinging instead of just looking at a picture of someone swinging. And his face is just so adorable. :)

It's amazing! When you think about it. It could hold meaning and be a good photograph. It doesn't just have to be "this, this and this" Spontaneous photographs are always my favorite to shoot because you don't always know what will come of it. A true art appreciation can look beyond the technical problems and see what the photographer (or other artist) is trying to "say" with the image. That's what makes art, well art; and this piece, whether or not you wished it to carry any sort of meaning, speaks to a person. Any way, I really like this piece. :)

"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most."- quote from secondhand Lions probably one of the smartest things I've heard.

Thanks - it is amazing, and this is not really my photography (although I love shooting kids and every year I shoot all the kids in our kindergartens - about 20 kids - in their play yards...).

If I knew how to do this intentionally I'd be famous!

Thanks for taking the time to write a meaningful comment!

I can take half the responsibility for his face (genewise... :)), the rest, apart from trying to pan, is mostly accidental... :)It works, though, and part of being a decent photographer is chossing the work to display...

this is fantastic. This is a good picture to me because it captures a moment of reality; a very important moment that seems rare to come by beyond this age. It's a reminder of the bliss of childhood. It doesn't matter if it's blurred or out of focus. In fact, I probably wouldn't like it as much if it was in focus. Otherwise it may feel too staged, thus taking away from the the realness of *that* moment. * that* boy at *that* very moment was really enjoying *that* swing--and that is wonderful.

I believe you nailed it - its the imperfection that makes it real and true - as details are missing due to lack of sharpness there is more focus in the atmosphere, the theme: The happiness and carelessness of a child on a SWING.

Thanks for this comment!
